Healthy snacks: 4 sweet and savoury toasts

I was brought up in a family where bread is regarded as more important than any other food. To this day, there was never a family lunch or dinner that didn’t have bread able to feed a whole village. A simple toast rubbed with a garlic clove and a dash of my grandma’s olive oil would make a perfect delight, however there is always space for some innovation.

The other day I was craving some whole wheat bread and came up with these four toasts, and I have been obsessed ever since! Two of them are sweet and the other two are savoury, so there is a treat for everyone.

 

Basic avo on toast

Smash half of an avocado (hopefully it won’t be on of those where all you get is a big pit), season with salt and pepper, spread over toast and top with cherry or plum tomatoes. Sprinkle with chilli flakes and cilantro (read this with a Mexican accent for more emphasis).

Peanut butter delight

You already know what’s my favourite PB, so I literally spread one tsp onto the toast and ate another one. Cover this blanket of goodness with some berries and dust some cocoa powder on top because it wasn’t already sweet enough. Great as breakfast with a nut milk cappuccino!

Crunchy spicy hummus

I often make my own hummus but this time I went for a little spicier Moroccan variation. Garnished with crunchy and fresh cucumber to balance the spiciness and topped with thyme and (my latest addiction) pumpkin seeds. This has lately became on of my favourite quick summer lunches.

Cottage cheese pick me up

Okay, this is easily one of my favourite snacks before a workout! It looks very plain and simple, but the concoction of sweet honey with a slightly tangy and salty cottage cheese is marvellous. Add some walnuts for crunchiness and a sprinkle of cinnamon and you have yourself the loveliest treat.
